SolidGoldFX FUZZBOX
Tone Bender MK II Style Silicon Fuzz

If there’s one fuzz that defined the raw, roaring spirit of British rock, it’s the Tone Bender Mk II. That gnarly grind and the long, singing sustain are still the benchmark, and for good reason – players and builders have been chasing it for decades. The Fuzzbox is our much-loved Rosie, reimagined once we’d lived with the original long enough to know exactly what we’d change. Under the hood it’s still a low-gain silicon circuit, just nudged to behave on a modern board without losing its bite. The result is pure vintage fury you can actually use.

Main Features:

    • Tone Bender Mk II-inspired silicon fuzz pedal
    • Low-gain silicon transistors – for articulate vintage grind and thick, touch-sensitive sustain
    • Vintage/Modern toggle – for two distinct input responses
    • Modern mode – adds low end and plays nicely with Wah pedals, buffers and modern pedalboards
    • Bias control – adjusts the operating point of the third transistor for a wide range of feel
    • Sag control – simulates a fading battery, varying circuit voltage from roughly 9 V down to 5 V
    • Dynamic, touch-sensitive cleanup from your guitar’s volume control
    • Thick sustain with strong note definition and harmonic richness
    • Top-mounted input/output jacks in a compact 125B enclosure
    • Relay-based true bypass switching with soft-touch footswitch
    • Hand-made in Montreal, Canada
    • Powered by a regular 9-18 V DC PSU
(centre -, 2,1 mm, 25 mA current draw at 9V)

The first thing you notice is how it holds together when you feed it a chord. It comes out gnarly and clear instead of collapsing into mush, and that’s a genuinely thrilling sound. Back the volume off and it cleans up in a way that still feels connected to your hands, not like someone stepped on the pedal. Lean into it and the sustain gets thick, but the notes stay defined – which is rarer than it should be on a fuzz this aggressive.

It’s not a straight retro clone though. Bias lets you move the third transistor around, so the whole thing goes from tight and snappy to soft, saggy and a bit compressed. It’s a huge part of why this thing feels so alive. Sag does the dying-battery trick, dropping the voltage from about 9 V down to 5 V. Eric Johnson used to keep a box of half-dead batteries just for this. Now it’s just a knob and, in our opinion, it sounds gorgeous.

The Vintage/Modern switch is the practical bit, and it’s the thing that makes the Fuzzbox a joy on a real board. Vintage is the raw, unfiltered Mk II response, every little pick detail right there and full of attitude. Modern smooths it out, adds some low end and, more importantly, stops the fuzz falling apart when it sees a Wah or a buffer. Which is basically every modern board, so that matters.

It all fits in a standard 125B box with top jacks and soft-touch relay bypass, so it doesn’t fight for space.

You get the old British fuzz character without the usual headaches. Raucous lead tones that sing, touch-sensitive cleanup that feels like an instrument and seamless interaction with the rest of your board. Plug it in, roll up the volume and let it roar.
